Give to Hayden Canyon Charter
About Our School
Hayden Canyon Charter (HCC) is focused on elevating student achievement and engagement through project based and investigative learning that tackles real-word challenges, and develops servant-leader character and habits of mind for inquiry, creative, critical and innovative thinking. HCC embraces a holistic approach to learning. This approach harnesses the creative catalyst within the arts and humanities, while also capturing discovery in the sciences, igniting the spark that fuels student engagement and investment in lifelong learning. Thus inspired, students build a cadre of skills for success, characteristics for achievement and fulfillment in life and work, and an ethic of excellence in the quality of work they create.
Desiring to provide students with engaging hands-on, personally relevant opportunities, the HCC founders determined that a school built on the principles and best practices of expeditionary learning would be the best fit. EL Education principles form the basis for HCC’s learning model. With roots in Outward Bound and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, expeditionary learning is a discover-by-doing educational program that engages children in collaboration and innovation. Parental and community involvement are built into the educational model. HCC’s approach to expeditionary curricula will link real-world issues with challenging project-based learning. HCC will encourage students to investigate and solve socially relevant issues and affect meaningful change in communities outside the classroom.
Due to their expanding initiative focusing on urban schools, EL Education is currently unable to extend official network status to Hayden Canyon Charter. While HCC is not a part of the official network, EL Education enthusiastically supports our charter. Additionally, the organization has offered our leadership team and staff access to regional professional development as well as the use of all EL materials for professional training, curriculum planning, and expeditionary exemplars.
